Sometimes you do something that just feels good, seems to fit right, leaves you with a bit of a glow. That's the way my representation of Mary, Joseph, and Baby Jesus left me...with a bit of a glow. They certainly don't lack in glow...seem to give off a light from their eyes and skin.
The sculpture is totally hand sculpted..no molds are ever used in my work, insuring a one-of-a-kind. It is made from Cernit clay, approximately 12 inches tall...13 including the walnut stained wood base.
Many color washes of Jacquard paints, including Lumiere and Dye-na-Flow were used to achieve the soft, gentle color with just a bit of glimmer. The eyes speak love and compassion. I didn't want a shine but just a soft light and those paints did it nicely. When starting the baby blanket, I wasn't sure what I really wanted, and suddenly I knew. If Jacob could have a coat of many colors, then Baby Jesus could have a blanket of many colors. It reminds me of the soft variegated yarn from which baby things are knitted. The finish was completed with a dry brush technique using white for a blended and softened appearance of the clothing.
For a bit of actual softness, I place a fringed square of burlap underneath their sandaled feet, being in a stable, it seemed fitting.
These are full body sculpts, made entirely of clay over a strong wire armature. Joseph's headdress is the exception, I dyed cheesecloth and finished it with a hardening compound. It's hard but still lends softness to the sculpture.
If you only have one heirloom piece in your holiday collections, this should be it.
The piece weighs approximately 4.5 lbs.
